God Of War ntsc will not boot on PS2

Hope someone can help. I bought the US version of God Of War because the PAL version is 50hz only and does not support progressive scan. My PS2 is PAL and fairly old (has a magic3) and will not boot the game. Instead of booting the screen that asks you to insert a PS2 game it goes to the browser screen. The US Soul Calibur 3 works fine though it is a more recent game.

Is the old chip the problem and if so is there a chip that will allow play of all games - I have an old unmodded first gen PS2 ? I could buy a US machine as I have few PAL PS2 games but I do not really have the space for 2 machines of the same format.

    Any help appreciated.

I'm guessing when you say Magic 3 you're talking about a Swap Magic v.3 disc?

If that's the case then unfortunately God of War (& a few others such as GT4) won't work with it unfortunately. Not sure of the exact technical reason but it basically has something to do with the capacity of the dvd God of War comes on (dual layer 9.4gb rather than a standard 4.7gb disc).

Don't know much about PS2 mod chips but I'd imagine any chip currently on the market will play all imports ok. Some older chips screwed up the prog scan support but don't think that's an issue nowadays.

Same prob here with the same setup, only I use HDAdvance 2.1.
Could be as you said tom-nook, I think they ironed it out with the coming of HDA version 3, it states to play dvd9 and has a patch for Soul Calibur 2 (3?), so it should also fix GOW US version.

You still need to flatten the ISO of a DVD9 and use WinHiip to install as HDA still only installs single layer disks to the HD using the built-in transfer program.

Euh, I dunno about that, mate. It claims to work with DVDdecryptor and sets up an ftp connection with the pc. I've got the progs, but not version 3.0, so I couldn't try it out yet. A friend of mine has got the new version, we'll see how it goes...

Okay so there IS that method as well, but it's not really ideal (means having to connect your whole PS2 to the PC, instead of just removing the HDD) and the transfer rate is a low slower afaik.

Connection can be enabled with a single click, removing takes a while longer, don't you agree? (WHOLE PS2=not much of a chore for me )
And then you'll have to shove it in an empty slot in an opened up pc??
Or do you have a cradle for this then?

Well for me considering the PC and PS2 are in two separate rooms, then yes

Plus the PC I have is clip locked, meaning it can opened easily without having to fiddle about. But that's just my circumstances. There are so few DVD9 games anyhow, that I've not needed to use this method much at all (just God of War and MGS2).

Thanks for the replies. I had a guy chip the machine about 3 years ago but do not remember the exact name of the chip. Progressive scan works ok on every other game that supports it.
What would be the best chip and the best generation of machine to play everything? Might be cheaper to import a US machine, most of my PS2 games are NTSC due to the lack of 60hz as standard on so many titles, though it is a lot of hassle just to play one game the way it was meant to be played.
That is why my current PS2 will be the last PAL games machine I will own. My US Gamecube was hassle free - every game in 60hz and most of them, at least the games in my collection, in progressive scan.
