    Mod protected games on PS2

    Hi!

I want to play (I have to get it first though) Final Fantasy VIII. I have the PAL version but it's lousy and I'm looking at getting the US version. IIRC, all FF8 versions were mod protected. Could I play the US version on my PS2 with an Infinity 1.32 (I think, could be 1.34 or 36) chip? Or do I just have to get a a US PS2 or wait for the US PS3?

According to this the US version isn't protected, at least in as much as a chip won't stop it working on a US machine. I don't know if that means it'll work on all chipped machines, though.

Either way I'd guess that PS2 chips can get around the protection. Later PS1 chips could, and all the early ones were very simple and easier to detect, so I'm sure that a PS2 chip with all the advanced features that they have can do it.

Failing that it's easy enough to make a copy yourself and remove the protection. Then you can put the genuine one away and play the copy.

Depends on the mod, some earlier PS2 mods could not get around the PS1 mod protection.

I should think the Matrix Infnity could, it's a top tier PS2 mod.

I just did some digging on Google and it looks like the Matrix Infinity does support anti-mod PS2 games. All of them are supported as of firmware 1.54 by the looks of it, so as long as you have that one or higher you should be fine.

I had a serious problem a few months back getting Bust a Groove 2 to work on a modded psone, came up with the anti mod screen and this was even when using a Stealth Chip that gets around most of them!

Anyway tried booting with a later version of PSXchange 2 which refused to boot it as well.

Was gutted then thought about using my Slimline Pstwo (modded with Matrix Infinity FW1.88) and booted first time so in answer to your question, a modded ps2 with the latest matrix infinity DEFINATLY does get around psone game protection

You can download boot discs (called Import Player?) that are supposed to get around the anti-mod protection. Just burn to a CD, boot on a modded console ans you should be good to go.

No idea if they actually work well, mind.

be careful mate - you say you have an infinity 1.32 but are you SURE it's a matrix infinity chip? was it installed for you or did you do it yourself?

there are these cheap ones called Modbo that are copies of the matrix infinity and can't be flash upgraded with the infinity software or else you'll kill the chip.

it happened to a mate of mine (was told it was a genuine matrix but was told to never flash it. dodgy as heck) and he had to just buy a new chip (a real matrix infinity)

if you're basing it purely on the fact that it says 1.32 or whatever in the setup menu then be very careful.

i think pretty much all the ps2 chips from the past few years support anti-mod ps1 games. the earliest ones, such as messiah 1 and origa won't (messiah 1 can't be turned off which is the most obvious check that anti-mod games use)

It's an inifinity 1.38 chip. We have a trustworthy mod shop here in Finland. It's worked great since I got it a couple of years ago.
