When my First 360 started to die I bought one of these and it definatly prolonged the death (Used to crash every time in-game graphics was used, with the Intercooler it would wait until the game started)
So when I got my brand new replacement (Dixons) I wasn't taking any chances and have used it since day 1.
You'l hear loads of peoples different opinion on these, some think they cause more damage than good (strain on the original internal fans), whereas some, like me, wouldn't do without one.
You'l definatly feel the difference in the heat coming from the console and sometimes it's a bit worrying just how warm the air is thats being pushed out of the intercooler.
I'm still 100% convinced that the problems with the 360 are insufficiant cooling, and I honestly think that the damage is caused when the 360 is turned immediately off after gaming (Chips don't get a chance to cool, whereas a PC has to return to Windows, shutdown etc)
I'd recommend

Seconded. I had to Dremel out a small part of the casing so that my wi-fi adapter didn't keep falling out of it's slot as the casing would push on the release button, but I'd never leave home without it now. This is my launch unit too. I've never had a DRE or any other problem ever. I'm also convinced 360 problems are caused by overheating too. Big thumbs up from me.
BTW, you get used to the noise of it pretty quickly.Kept you waiting, huh?

I had a 360 pod engineer in to fix our faulty pod at work that had the checkerboard effect that killed my first 360 Its down to dust.
The dust (esp if its in a bedroom) gets sucked in and is attracted to the heatsink where it sits and burns stopping any air getting to it he recomended hoovering it every week and once a month a can of compressed air if your friendLast edited by dvdmike; 18-10-2006, 08:59.

I'd say dust is always a contributing factor but it definately isn't the cause. When my 360 died I took the plunge and had a gander inside....there wasn't any dust whatsover. Most PC's (including small factor Shuttles) are regularly covered in dust internally and operate fine, it's not ideal by any means!
The 360 is simply poorly ventilated by itself, I mean 2x internal fans to cool a pretty decent spec DDR3 machine?
I wouldnt be suprised if in the future there'l be a dashboard update that leaves the internal fans on for 1 minute when the machine's switched off.....that is if Microsoft ever get off their high horse and admit there's a serious flaw with the 360.
