can the x360 talk to teh pc ?

Heard various rumours you can browse the pc from the 360, is this true?

if so, can I literally drag and drop music like mp3s or avi films etc?

Would be even cooler if u could play MAME on it but i guess thats wishful thinking atm.

how is it done if it is possible ?

    cheers

    no.

if you have a media center pc running XP, you can access the shared music/pics and some fairly useless formats of video.

if you have a standard PC, you can run Windows Media Connect to achieve the same result, minus any video support.

    That's it.

If you just have regular Windows XP (Home or Pro, doesn't matter) and you install either Windows Media Connect or Windows Media Player 11 Beta 2 you can stream your music and photos to the 360. Mac users can use Connect360 to stream their iTunes and iPhoto libraries in the same way, and it'll transcode unsupported formats so that you can actually use it for more formats than the official software.

For video you're going to need Windows XP Media Center Edition, which basically means you need a media centre PC. I keep hearing conflicting rumours that it'll be built into Vista by default so if that's the case you can just upgrade to Vista and go.

As for MAME, I don't think that's running but a while ago someone got a NES emulator to work through Media Center on the 360. You can see it and read about it here.

Bugger. I was hoping to connect my new 360 to my XP home PC and watch vids. Is this likely to change? ie - will MS add support in a patch or somesuch?

I guess that just leaves me with MP3s and pictures. Does this mean I can select songs for soundtracks *on the PC* and the 360 will play them or is it a case of copying them over onto the 360 hard drive?

          Cheers.

Support for video streaming from XP Home/Pro was added in the last dash update, which happened after this post was originally made. It only works for WMV files, though.

It work very well with windows vista despite poor support of non microsoft (WM9) video and audio files.

You need genuine windows XP to make it work.

                  Cheers. I have genuine XP

I'm new to 360, so apologies for stupid questions. To explain my other question properly, which I didn't manage first time round, is the following scenario feasible? -

I connect my 360 to my XP using an ethernet cable and the Media Connect software.
In the middle of Gears of War, I hit the dashboard button, browse to my PC's hard drive, select an album.
While playing GoW, the album plays in the background without copying the album to my 360's hard drive.

To complicate this further, I've just ordered a wireless adaptor. Can I have both connected at once?

                  Thanks for any advice.

                  Jay

I think when you set up media centre on PC, you need to put in media centre number taken off XBOX 360.

My PC and XBOX 360 are both wireless and use wireless router.

                    HAve a look at

For information on how to set it up.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, though I'm not sure that link is relevant to me as I'll be using XP and media connect.

Maybe I sohuld just wait until my wireless adaptor arrives. I'm thinking now it might be easier to connect wirelessly for online (wireless connection to my wireless router/modem) and connect via ethernet to my PC for music etc. I'm guessing both can be set up at the same time? Or does the wireless adaptor hog the ethernet port?
