I bought a Western Digital MyBook recently, 320Gb for just over a hundred quid and has free backup software with it. Can't recommend them highly enough, you could make your own one up as has been mentioned already. With HDD space being so cheap, there's no excuse not to do it now.

I've not gone down the RAID route as a lot of my data is static - mp3s, pictures etc. With the new backup software in Leopard and Vista, it should be even easier to have reliable backups done on your home PC/Mac.

my $HOME is rsyncd over SSH every hour on a cron job to my house server

so are most of my applications, its saved my ass in the past, I've managed to restore in less than an hour.

never lost a single 'bit' of data, everyone should have a fileserver I stacked it with another 80GB drive last night and upgraded it to slackware 11.0

      awesome

        Resurrection time!

I brought a Synology Diskstation 210j the other day. It's a 2 bay Nas, and is just wonderful. Had the initial set up done in about 5 minutes - so easy it's unreal.
