Xbox 360 freezes after 3 hours play

    Hi,

After playing for about 3 hours my 360 will often freeze. It does this on all sorts of games.

When I have the 360 in teh lounge, I can open the patio door and this seems to keep the unit cold, and it doesn't freeze.

When I have the 360 on the study floor, (I play my online coop battles in solitude, as mrs CS likes to use the TV!) it doesn't have the air flow and invariably it will crash.

It is fine on reboot for a while, then will hang again.

This can be frustrating when hosting games and when i feel the back of the 360 it is so hot it nearly burns me.

The study floor is wooden, so that won't help, but the 360 is not covered up or anything.

What should I do? Should I stand the 360 up on lego bricks or something? I don't know how to keep it cool.

Does this sound like I need to return the 360? It's been this way since I first bought it in December, and I just have a hunch it's overheating, rather than "Permament failure"

The unit gets so hot, I wonder if the plastic will melt.

It will probably get the 3 red lights soon, it happened to me.
Be happy that it happened before Decemeber (if you don't have extended warranty)

    Call microsoft for a replacement.

      Thanks.

I called MS, and explained my symptoms.

They are sending a carboard box or something.

      They say:

      5 working days for box.
      15 working days for repair.

      That's a ****.

Tried moving the power supply? If that overheats it'll cause nonsense too.

Or you could buy one of these babies: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-...n-70-1gih.html

Also I read on Kotaku a few days ago that a company is releasing an intercooler unit that clips onto the back of the machine when it stands vertical and blows into the case like the four winds. Trying to find a link to it now.

This is very common in 360s. There's two reported problems that have been known to cause symptoms like freezing and red lights.

                  1. Thermal transfer material incorrectly applied on the CPU core (in some cases a plastic layer is present between heatsink and CPU). Can be fixed by cleaning and reapplying new thermal grease.

                  2. Poor quality solder used on the motherboard. When the motherboard reaches a certain temperature, the solder becomes more brittle and connections become weak or break entirely. Can be fixed by applying a heat gun (used for stripping paint) over the motherboard evenly.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend these DIY fixes for the problems...
