Xbox 360 Error 68 when cable set to HDTV ?

I've had my 360 swapped for a new one today as the old one was making odd noises.

All was working well on setup. I then set switched the supplied cable into HDTV mode set the output for 720 powered off and powered on, error 68 appears.

Set the cable back to standard and power on all ok. Set the cable back to HDTV and voila error 68 appears.

So I get my 360 VGA connect that and setup the 360 for the highest res I can get from my TV, 360 boots ok and plays ok.

Go back to the supplied cable, flick the switch to HDTV error 68..

Any idea as to what is going on ? Faulty cable, faulty 360 ? Help ??

er, 720p shouldnt even appear as an option unless you have the cable in HD mode should it?

Assuming the error code your getting is E68? If so it looks like it may be hard drive related:

        http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917874/

Might be worth trying the cable in hd mode without your hard drive attached and see if that makes any difference.

Ok thanks, I'll remove the HD and try again.

Gave and took it back to Game for a replacement unit, the new one appears fine.

Arghhhh.. I spoke to soon, whenever I power the 360 off the fan makes a hell of a racket. Seems to be ok when powered on but switch it off and it sounds like a lawnmower.. And this is the newest build ( 07-07-06 ) that I've had so far.

I'll give it a couple of days to see if it settles down but if not it's 360 number 4.

Met a mate I'd not seen for a while in Game and he was returning a 360 he'd purchased the day before because it was faulty.. what is going on ?
