I think the only way to play online is to have matching games and console, so if you have US games you need a US console to play online.

Well if you're intent on playing online and happy with legally nebulous methods it's possible to patch a copy in a certain way that will make it work online, so you could buy the game and make a copy that would work for the online modes. Doesn't exactly encourage legitimate importers and doesn't work with all games but it's the only way around this quandry.

Like I said though, you're on your own if you want specifics. I only know that the technique exists.

Just a quick word to say thanks for the advice provided on this. Tuesday evening I took delivery of a modded slimline PS2 with Matrix Infinity chip.

Aesthetically the slimline console is much smaller and neater than I expected and I really like the look of it and I can once again get back to playing the shooter, RPG and beat em up goodness that only a chipped PS2 can provide.

Initial D: Special Stage teased me by appearing to boot but crashed just as the intro was starting but it?s a small price to pay I guess.

Couple of queries mostly to do with PSone games on the system. Have Sony changed the method of how backwards compatibility works in the later models? I know back in the early consoles, they were able to play PSone games (or most) as it contained some parts of the PSone hardware inside the machine itself. However, I?ve spotted a couple of differences now such as the traditional PSone style bootup screen not showing up initially but also the games appear to have a weird look to them.

        It?s hard to explain.
