I got the ISO and burned it to a CD just fine, I then manged to get that disc to boot in the PS2, and changed the PSX screen fix option to "ON". I then saved the settings having pressed reset fout times to be in update mode beforehand.

I also saved the config manager to my memory card, which shows as a "corrupted file", but I believe thats normal.

My (albeit limited) understanding is that I should now be able to hold down triangle and press reset to acess the config manger file from the memory card, which i can't do.

When I re-inserted the config manger disc, my new "settings", i.e screen fix "on", were still present, but this has made no difference to my display problem, whcih still only persisits, puzzlingly, with a few, but not all games.

That make a bit more sense?
    Yeah, crystal.

My advice would be to be load the disc up again and try turning of the macrovision and green screen fixes, also turn off the colour correction. The other option would be to try and boot the disc using the PSX quick load mode, which means you hold down L1 when you reset or startup the PS2.

    Hope you sort it.

Loaded the config disc again and disbaled all those, keeping screen-fix on, but no luck. the L1 mode doesn't seem to do anything...

I miss the days of my SNES when all i needed was a wobbly tower of cartridges to play FFIII!
