PS2 games ?

hello i am Dangerous' girlfriend. we have been talking about me getting a ps2 console for christmas (yes i know it's nearly time for ps3, but its my first console and im not interested in spending ?400 right now).

basically, to date i have only played a couple of console games. i very much enjoyed FINAL FANTASY VIII and am mostly into story based games, that immerse you in a filmic sort of way.

dangerous has recommended some games, KATAMARI and REZ, but neither of these really grab me. has anyone got any suggestions of ps2 games that might appeal? dangerous is more of an xbox kinda guy so he can't really help me too much, although he wants YAKUZA which i also think looks good.

The obvious one is FFX. Many people here don't like it, I will never understand why, it should suit you well if you love FF8 (as do I).

I have played a bit of X and i liked what i saw. Also, is FFXI just an online game or is there an offline mode?

Dragon Quest VIII should be top of any PS2 to-buy list, it's amazing. Shame FFXII isn't out here yet, so addicted to that right now, and it'd be another good choice!

to be honest im not keen on the cartoony style graphics, i like it looking real.

ICO. Shadow of the Colossus. Silent Hill 2 and 3. Fahrenheit. Beyond Good & Evil. Shadow of Memories. Disgaea. Gregory Horror Show. MGS 2: Sons of Liberty/MGS3: Snake Eater. Project Zero. Resident Evil 4. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Etc.

The first few are essentials if you're looking for something cinematic and with personality .

FFXI is pure online, MMO. Most inaccessible genre in the world, not what your after.

FFXII steps back to offline, borrowing heavily from FFXI, and while it's still in my 'to play' pile, it sounds a little more up your streets.

Taking a bit of a jump here, but have you considered Kingdom Hearts? Might not be your kinda thing, it's essentially FF meets Disney, but executed in the best possible way. It beats FF in terms of characterisation IMO.

Xenosaga is the first series that jumps to my mind but I imagine your going to be getting a PAL console and the first Xenosaga wasn't released here, sadly.

The second was however so you could always jump straight in with that.

I'll also recommend Shadow of Memories, its pretty easy to play and its got quite a nice story.
