Rightio, a work colleague of mine has a PS2, which he got for Christmas, but now the thing refuses to read any DVD or game disc. If I remember correctly, isn't there a phone number he could phone where Sony would swap the faulty unit for a working one?

Only if it's in warranty and you can prove it. If it was bought new for him at Christmas it shouldn't be a problem.
