    Help with Netgear DG834G

    following problems stated here:

I decided upon recommendation to buy the Netgear DG834G + the added bonus that it was reduced @ Argos and came with a free Wireless adaptor.

However, like with my Linksys i've become stuck

I've managed to get on the net though the Router Via the Ethernet port (which isn't a viable option as the router will be downstairs once problem sorted), but when i disconnect it to try wirelessly i can't access the net. I can connect to the router but still can't get on the net. What am i doing wrong?

    Please help.

    Thanks

Have you checked your router settings, and are you using the latest firmware for your router?

have you set up the wireless Key on it?

It could be that your wireless connection isnt entering the right code to get connected m8

Check the wireless section of the router and ensure that its the same

Unplug the ethernet cable and restart the PC. Windows can sometimes be a bit funny when you decide to change internet connection between network cards

Is the Wireless LAN light on the router lit? Can you access the wireless settings through the router control panel?

I had to set one of these up for a friend and it was an absolute nightmare. Once I got it working it was alright for a couple of hours before it the firmware spontaneously decided to downgrade itself to the non wireless model and the wireless light went out. Couldn't even access the wireless settings without the help of a backdoor and changing them had no effect. Terrible piece of kit, fortunately swiftly replaced by a Thomson Speedtouch 585 which has worked flawlessly.

And.... obviously routers do these kind of things..... go looking for a non wireless version of firmware, click on download, choose where to save it on your PC and then just load it up and reboot.

The Netgear DG834G is one of the most popular routers in the UK for a reason. Its a great piece of kit.

OP - What actual problems are you having over the wireless, did you say can connect ok to the router over wireless, but just not the net? If so that sounds like a setting on your PC thats not right. What actually happens if you try to browse to a site.

Could be your wireless settings. Look under "wireless settings" in the router setup.

Make sure that "enable wireless access point" and "allow broadcast of name(SSID)" are both checked.

Also you might need to setup the wireless station access list found under the wireless settings.

If you click setup access list there should be a check box called "turn access control on" if this is checked then you will have to add your pc as a trusted wireless station, otherwise you could always uncheck it (but this would leave your connection open for anyone to access it).
