Speeding up a mac?

just wondering if anyone thinks their macbook is a bit slow?

just got myself a dell 2007wfp and found some chugging whilst jumping from word to safari etc...

i have also found entourage a bit slow for a while now...

I only have 1.8ghz + 1gb ram, would boosting it to 2gb ram improve things?
I have bootcamp installed on it and when i run ie + word + outlook it's all snappy in comparison to mac os...

any ideas on how to speed up things?

Certainly sounds like you need more RAM. I don't think Microsoft Office is a universal binary yet, so it's being emulated which would probably take up quite a lot.

Check Activity Monitor's System Memory tab and see if there are any page outs, if there's a lot there, then you definitely don't have enough.

Another solution could be to try NeoOffice http://www.neooffice.org/ as it runs natively.

Not bashing MS, but the general concensus with Mac users is it's a bloated product. Maybe try using NeoOffice as Andrew suggested. My Mini is a 1.66 with 1gb ram and it runs NeoOffice with no problems.

just spent last night using bootcamp after a 3 month break from xp. though xp does not have all the fancy functions (corner options: all screens etc) i found xp extremely snappy!

Having to wait for safari to load really killed it for me... myie2 just popped up: none of the jumpy 'please wait i'm bout to open' nonsense...

is anyone else like me on my mac? or is it time for me to reinstall macosx?

I think the problem might be that you're actually quitting applications then. The way OSX is designed is that you're meant to leave the applications "open" (small arrow below them in the dock) and only close the active windows, rather than the program itself, unless you're not going to be using it again for a long time.

i had a thought about that when I first started using mac... never confirmed my thought though. newbie i am
