    Starting Final Fantasy VII

As some of you may be aware my love of JRPG's is not the most profound but the only one that ever made me love the genre was Final Fantasy VII.

I watched & helped my mate complete it when it was released but although I've owned the game on that Christmas I stoped started it intill this weekend. I thought if I never play another JRPG again I may as well complete the best.

So I just wanted to know if there was any tips you guys could offer me as I venture in my epic quest. I'm about 5 hours in with two members, me and Aeris, and I'm on level 14 with her on level 12. I have just got to a small town called sector six directly after Aeris's house. I have a few concerns and a few questions.

I'm slighlty concerned about my health as if there are only four enemy's in a battle they can wipe out over half of both my characters health. I have spent over one hour getting my level up and then sleeping to recover my HP and MP but they still take it down at a hell of a rate. I'm also concerned that if I spend hours leveling up with me and Aeris then the game will take away my charater or stop me paying as them as I cant use Barret, Tifa or a few others. I'm aware Aeris dies through the story so I know about her!

If anyone could offer any advice or guidance before I really get far in this, it would be much appreciated!

To be quite honest I am baffled how you are struggling, i have been playin g this on my PC recently and breezed through it. Anyhow, you should not be fighting with just cloud and aeris you really need to get to where you are going quick, its either back to aeris house, or back to recover tifa, either way get it done as you should not be levelling without 3 in your party.

This is really all too early to be thinking about levelling up. Worry about that when you leave Midgar (but you don't need to do it that much anyway, you can get by with just progressing with the story so long as you don't slack too much).

As above says, right now you just wanna get to the next place. Do try not to actually run from battles thoughm, a bad habbit.

I dont run from any battle and I'm trying to live with the random battles but am starting to enjoy the leveling up and love the rest of the game.

Good to hear that I dont have to worry about the leveling to much, I'm terrified that I'll get to a point and wont be able to get past. Are there any points in the game where it'll take any of my characters away so I can't use them?

Check what materia, weapons, armour and accessories you have and try and choose the best ones available for your characters - that should make the random battles a tad easier.

Although those aforementioned items can be bought, the best ones are usually found.

One piece of advice, do not neglect to keep Barrett levelled up, I never used him that much since I didn't like him, but there is indeed a part where you have to solo with him.

I recently replayed through the game, and I actually used Vincent and Yuffie on my team (2 side characters), it really doesn't matter that much.

I totally know the feeling about being worried about being too low level, but you can get away with doing very little so long as you cover enough when playing the main story, Doing the secrets helps too, more levelling.

What you must remember is that the developers didn't making the game expecting players to sit there doing hours of powerlevelling, it's not a good mechanic for extending longevity and they know it.

Really, stop worrying and enjoy it!

mate don't worry about levelling up at this point! played it through a few times and have never really bothered levelling up properly until the end of disc 1 (when the bosses actually start to get a bit tricky if your levels are ****e), just play the game and don't L+R it!

one thing i will say though is that it might be a good idea to use barret as a main character through the game, i've never used him properly before (usually go for cid/vincent/yuffie) but have seen a video of him (edit: here it is, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD2Y7hWgTUo , can't make most of it out as it's in japanese but it seems the blokes got a massive chain of mime materia or something making barret completely rinse emerald weapon in about a minute) using one of his high level limit breaks and its ****ing badass

cid does something similarly badass aswell with his level 4 limitbreak if i remember rightly so i'd recommend him too. the rest of the characters limit breaks aren't all that great in my humble opinion and thats a quite a big factor when you're fighting some of the hardcore bosses on disc 3. they don't take any of the characters away apart from aeris btw so don't worry about that (don't bother using aeris ever really)

Far too many anal FF fans go on about powerlevelling as if it's a necessity, but it's really not.
Assuming your going to be going for the screts, materia, sidequests etc too, then you'll rack up enough exp on the way. There may be little occassions where you need to level a bit to beat X boss

                  or maybe the Ultima weapons

. but these people who spend days of pure levelling need their head checked if they think they're doing it just to aid progression of the game.
The above goes even more for FF8, where you can get to level 100 with little real effort.

Of course, the above only really applys if your fighting most battles you get into, avoid running from battles etc.

You don't really need to level every character either. Sane recommends levelling Barrett - maybe, but I don't think i did. I kept Cloud, started using Vincent as soon as he was avaliable, and I'm a real sucker for Yuffie so I used her too.

Most people use Cloud/Tifa/Barrett though, the 3 main characters of the story basically.

It?s been a while since I played 7 but I seem to recall that even if you don?t use characters actively in your party, they will still be levelled to some extent automatically (I think a couple of levels or so behind your highest). Maybe I?m really out with this as it has been a while.

I do remember the pacing of the game being incredibly well-balanced and never recall any point where dedicated power-leveling sessions were necessary. These are usually reserved from when you attempt to tackle some of the game?s extra mega bosses.

So what's the best way to play this. I've had the PC and PSX versions for years, need to dig them out, wanna star playing again. Have heard that the PSX version can look pretty nice through emulation, and that the PC version has some unofficial high res patches etc. Anyone recommend anything, cos it looks crap through my ps2, black borders and all.

Apparently the music is rubbish in the PC version, I think its MIDI. It can also be annoying to get install from what I hear. Personally, if you have a decent joypad you can use with your PC, i'd play it through epsxe, you can mess around with some of the settings and make a lot of games look quite a bit better. And you can up the FPS to get through really tedious bits in some games quickly (sneaky I know).

Don't mean to be a scrooge Wools, but you could spoiler tag the fact that

                        Aeris dies

, I know most people know, but not everybody, I was pissed of when I found this out before playing the game!

After playing FFXI there's not much gameplay on this at all. Never any need to debuff or anything. Just wade in with massive melee/ranged/summons and you will be able to storm thorugh the entire story easy enough.

The extra bosses at the end of the game are the only enemies that require any real strategy.

There are some fun materia set-ups that take the piss big-time. Link Phoenix summon with final attack and you're practically invincible as long as you stock up on MP.

Oh yeah, the PC music is pants. Avoid.

I was working on getting all my characters to lvl99 although I gave up on that after I realised I was just wasting my time like a zombie. I have about 90million gil (keep selling mastered 'ALL' materias) and around four Knights of the Round materias.

Heh, I always do this. Get really into an RPG, decide that i'm going to max out my characters completely and then just lose interest. I think the closest I ever got to getting my characters fully maxed out was in Secret of Mana.

Yeah, it's a fairly easy and fun game as long as you fight all the bad guys.
The one thing that I'll say is that when you get to the end of the game, find out where Barrett's ultimate weapon is, and make sure you get it. It's pretty easy to miss, but it's very powerful.
But you've got about 20 hours to start worrying about that.
