Wii Video Output - Will it look best on a HDTV or an SDTV?

As the title really, had a look around and couldn't see any similar questions.

I'm getting a HDTV in a few days ready for the Wii launch but will be keeping the old CRT. Already have an RGB cable pre-ordered but i'm hearing constant banter on the official forums as to which of the two TV's will give the best picture. If I plug it into the component HD socket then it can go in progressive scan on certain titles, but the picture will also have to be upscaled to a 720p native screen which could cause distortion. RGB scart on my old CRT will have the sharpest picture as it'll be the native resolution, but it'll be interlaced.

    which would you chaps recommend?

Not a expert but 480p on a HDTV is better then progressive scan on a CRT in my experiance. I dont think your TV would auto-upscale to 720p, it would just play it in 480p

All HDTVs scale to their native resolutionsa to show you the image on the whole screen, otherwise you would only see a 480p image take up half the screen of a 720p TV

That's what I thought, and because PAL (or NTSC) SD output doesn't scale perfectly into the native resolution, it's going to distort somewhat. Haven't seen it first hand yet as I don't own a HDTV, but I can imagine it will distort fine edges when viewing up close. Is it a worthy trade-off in order to get the progressive scan? or shall I just whack it straight into the SDTV.

It depends on the TV, some seem to handle it well, others less so. I'd go for HDTV if I were you - future proof and other console proof too

Yeah, definitely depends on the TV. Only way to be sure is to try it.

Thanks for the tips, I won't chuck this CRT out just yet then. But i'm still getting the HD, Gears of War would never forgive me otherwise

ahhhh good old panny, i kept my pwd6 plasma especially for the wii, 480p native ftw!!!

oh and judging by past experience, RGB on a decent crt will look better than 480p on almost every 1366x768 screen.

I had a 36 inch Toshiba CRT that did 480p and the Gamecube & PS2 looked stunning in pro-scan on it. Much better that what I get on my 40 inch HDTV now. The trade off is that the 360 looks better on my current set-up than it ever would have looked on my old set-up. I would personally have preferred to have kept my old CRT just for the Wii. Alas, I needed the money to fund my HDTV. It was a bugger getting my old one down the stairs though. It weighed nearly 100 Kilos.

i decided to wait another year for(yet another) tv upgrade. 1080p sets are around the 1500 quid range and tbh i beleive lcd technology will hit a sweet spot in 1-2 years time. and 480p from 7-8 feet away is awsome on the panny anyways.
