(Mac) Hacking the Superdrive - Possible?

I've just tried to reset my Mac's superdrive to Region 2, as it was previously set on Region 1. However, although it says I have one more chance to change the region, when I try to do so, I get an error message.

Is there any way to get round this, or am I stuck with my dvd drive on Region 2?

Does not using VLC rather than DVD player negate all that business?

And if that doesn't work you can use MacTheRipper to remove the region protection. Not as convenient though I admit...
