Possible to play US/UK PS1/PS2 games on JPN PS3?

No, it's JPN only for backwards compatibility.

I think there will be a patch in the future to allow us play the game by unlocking region coding via PS3 Linux. But it need to be safe for us to play the games and allow us to play onlne normally. I think there are hackers who will be looking for a solution.

Afaik, the Linux OS can't see the PS3 OS and vice versa, it'll be difficult to say the least.

Argh, why don't they just make it region-free like they did for the PS3 games?

Ah well, we can always hope the homebrew community come with something eh ... you know, something like DC-X for the Dreamcast?
