Xbox picture quality - is it stunted?

In XBMC, I've turned off some "flicker filter" and "soften" thingies. The RGB picture (in modded mode) now looks totally bright / pin-sharp and text looks amazing. It doesn't seem to carry across to the unmodded dash though. Is the standard xbox picture quality massacred by some dodgy filtering?

You are very right, the default dash and all games are set to a flicker filter value of 5, which effectively blurs the picture. Some helpful guy over at xbox scene has however made Flicker****er, a patcher you can use on any .xbe file to set change the value. Haven't used it myself since I'm using an LCD tv but judging fromt he comments it will make a big difference.

Thanks. How retarded. It looks so much better without it. All these years of thinking the Xbox output is cack when there's nothing wrong with it (except you can't use it without modding the box).

It was actually up to the developers to implement the flicker filter to whatever degree they wanted their game to use, but it seems that the majority of them just didn't know or care and left it as level 5. It can now be forced for games within XBMC as of the latest builds.
