Pal Wii: Gamecube Games Question?

That feature was dictated by software and as Sofasurfer said, that was removed for PAL games.
If it was enabling 480p on games that might not have been designed to support it, it could case more trouble than it was worth - they'll have done this to protect the backwards compatibility, I think.

In the Wii Operations manual (channels and settings) it says that "EDTV/HDTV (480p) does not work with Nintendo gamecube software. If EDTV/HDTV 480p is selected and you start a Nintendo Gamecube game, the setting will automatically be adjusted to 50Hz (576i) or 60 Hz (480i) dependent on the software specifications"
So no prog scan for us

I know the Pal GC didn't have the option, simply because Nintendo gave us the 60hz option instead. Obviously ntsc machines didn't need a 60hz option, so Nintendo gave them prog-scan instead. The Pal machine could have had both options, but sadly, prog-scan was more of an American, Japanese, thing back in 2001-2002, so Nintendo decided we didn't need it.
Obviously... any Pal game that is prog-scan compatible in ntsc form, would if forced, run in prog-scan. ( as the Qoob mod chip proves )
If the Pal Wii isn't forcing compatible GC games to run in prog-scan, it's simply because Nintendo don't want to confuse the ' casuals '
If they gave me the option, I wouldn't cry when a certain incompatible GC game doesn't run in prog-scan. I would simply look at a list, and see the games which games are prog, or not.
There is no reason why Pal GC games couldn't just run in prog-scan when capable, and in SD when they are not compatible. Nintendo could have said:
" With the Wii, you can now run compatible GC games in prog-scan, making them look better. Another great Wii benefit! "
People like me lose out once again in Pal land. I'll be buying a U.S machine!
