Weird MS-related problem on mate's PC. At my wit's end :(

The following sites won't open on her pc:

this applies to both IE6 (or may have been 7, can't remember now) and also Firefox.

and also MSN messenger won't either.

all other sites work, including those for antivirus programs (i've seen pc's that get diverted to localhost when accessing spyware/virus removal sites), and i'm assuming stuff like yahoo msgr probably would, too.

first thing i did was have her wipe the hosts file clean as that was my first instinct.

then, using this amazingly groovy site www.webex.com (uses a java applet and works through firewalls, etc. it's really good for anyone who gets bored fixing stuff over the phone), i've been remotely accessing the pc from here and trying this and that, including installing SP2 (she had SP1), spybot, and running virus scans etc but nothing comes up.

it's a compaq, and i had her do the recovery. first time she did it it was non-destructive and didn't fix anything. second time was the full destructive recovery including formatting, but still the problem persisted.

silly compaq doesn't hide the recovery partition, and i haven't really looked around in there but if it's a file-based install (i think it is, no imaging involved, as it doesn't use ghost/etc), then there's a chance that if this were a virus it could fiddle with the recovery files themselves (of course it couldn't if they were drive images)

a mate of hers gave a proper windows CD and installing with that (including full format of the C drive) didn't sort it out either. she's with NTL (connects over ethernet) and i'm baffled as to what could be going on. i didn't have her format the recovery partition in case it is clean and hence would mean subsequent reinstalls would be a big hassle with driver setup etc.

so we have a fresh install of windows that is still doing it. over the phone, i had her check the system properties and it said Win XP Version 2002 and no mentions of service packs which freaked me out alot (and also means it was installed with access to the internet and no firewall turned on).

she went on a forum and the best answer she got was to install Linux, the gits

I'm no expert but maybe it's to do with the modem? Considering you tried pretty much everything else it could be worth a shot, try a different modem if you have access to one.

cheers, but it's ntl so it's straight from the pc to the set-top-box. there's no router in-between

If you have reinstalled Windows and the problem is still occuring, I would put money on the problem being at NTL's end.Contact them and discuss it with them as it might be a problem at their end.

i'm gonna take my laptop there and see what happens. if it does it with mine on her connection then will get on ntl's back.

Has she got a proxy set in her browser ?

I have a pipex broadband connection, and unless I use their proxy server, there are a number of sites that wont load.

These sites includes the Microsoft ones that you mentioned.

This site seems to have a list of a number of NTL proxies - might help.

i'll give it a go later on but that sounds the most plausible, and would explain why reformatting wouldn't help at all.

i'm thinking it'd be an idea to use the ntl install cd as that would probably sort out such settings.

your post is a glimmer of hope, Garf, thanks a bunch m8

No worries fella - hope it fixes the problem for you.

It was a major hassle for me before I worked out what was going on, as there were so many sites I couldn't get to.

The broadband I have at home is supplied by work for on-call, working from home etc etc so I can't really complain too much about how it affects my non work stuff

                  lol no you can't.

                  but Mr. T could!

i'm assuming then that, as it's only happened within the past few weeks, she's done something that reset the settings somehow. not really difficult, but i'm wondering what would've done it to prevent this in the future.

googling, i found a site that tells you if you're using a transparent proxy, and hopefully that'll help me decide which one to go for from that list.

bloody proxies! i remember when our homechoice was on a NAT and you could hardly do any fun stuff at all

                    Garf you star.

tried a proxy and lo and behold, hotmail.com and xbox.com started working properly. the pc's in a state though - pre-SP1, no firewall, no antivirus, nothing, so we're gonna format it again later on.

don't know what this means for msn though, as i'd imagine there could be problems with things like sending/receiving files and the like. i was too scared to try logging in to hotmail/msn msgr on a pc in that state, so didn't.

                      Result !

                      Glad it worked...

Not sure about MSN, but we use a proxy in the office as well (although it's an onsite proxy) and MSN file transfers seem to be OK - give it a go - once the PC been 'secured'......

lol the plot thickens - when reformatting via the windows cd she was given, the F10 recovery capability was lost (must be an MBR thing i reckon. the recovery partition is still intact) but smart girl had created the recovery discs using compaq's own program last week. BUT, after recovering from the discs, the windows setup won't run now so i'm thinking dodgy burns or something to that effect.

aaanyhoo, i'm gonna have to sort it out but at least we know what to do now.
