Any impressions of PS3 picture quality over VGA

Anyone actually using a VGA lead for starters ? just interested, as if/when I get a PS3 it will probably spend most of it's life connected to my PC monitor. Thanks.

D-terminal isn't the same as VGA...
    Kept you waiting, huh?

Unfortunately that's D-Terminal, a Japanese cable basically the same as Component with added sync data (I think).

The confusion comes because 'D-Sub' is the name of the connectpr used for VGA cables.

Correct Jake. Supplied as standard with Japanese 360 Premium Packs. I do believe you can get some kind of D-terminal to VGA converter though.

Ah I see thought it was all a bit too easy, and my experience of using VGA boxes has been shall we say underwhelming. Will investigate D-terminal to VGA converter further though.

Shame, just have to kick the missus off the TV I suppose. Thanks chaps.

It's component, so you'd be better off using component leads.

I know thanks, but there's no component input on my monitor so was looking for an alternative

Slightly off topic but can you use a HDMI to DVI convertor if such a thing exists? ie. use a HDMI cable on the console but convert the other end to DVI on the monitor\screen connection?

Shane: Yes you can get a HDMI to DVI cable, but you must make sure BOTH the Monitor your connecting to AND the cable your using are HDCP compliant otherwise you will get a black image.

David: To be honest, D-Terminal to VGA is not the best option if I were you. Instead I would focus on finding a good Component to VGA converter for around ?25 which will be alot easier to find since its used quite alot over in USA and the UK.

I'd imagine the VD-Z3 would work nicely, though it (like most Component-to-VGA transcoders) only works with a progressive input.

The bad news is that there's no VGA support full-stop for PS3. The good news is that I know for a fact that many key developers are pushing for it to be added - by simple virtue of the fact that the more HD displays supported by PS3, the better.

However, the only VGA cable we're likely to see is the multi-AV cable shipped with PS2 Linux. This doesn't offer RGB with H/V syncs but instead syncs on green. I'm not sure if this is standard on VGA monitors and will be supported as widely as RGB/HV.

I tried the linux cable and all i got was a a shade of green on the screen on my brothers plasma.

I've yet to try it on a vga monitor though.

I had to use the VD-Z3 temporarily and I can confirm it works a treat

It won't work as there is no support in the OS for it... yet. Support is being mooted but it's not on any schedule.
