using line-in as source for music?

i want to feed my macbook with audio through the line-in whilst outputting the music via the internal speakers.

is this possible?

i have my 360 connected to my monitor but i dont have external speakers. the closest speakers around is the ones inside my macbook

could anyone explain how to get it to work? I have all the necessary wires connected but no sound coming out. I can see the input volume jumping up and down in the system window though...
