Xbox Gamertag question

A strange one, this: if a gamertag is changed through Live, will the old gamertag then be available to register?

So if my gamertag is, for example, 'oldgit' - if I change this to 'spleenboy', can a new user then come along and register 'oldgit'?

I doubt it, feels like a crummy systems at the moment. I dont think old tags are wiped meaning a lack of usable tags by newbies to Xbox live. I think MS should really think about doing flushes of tags ever so often.

When Xbox Live originally came out on the first Xbox I got Number45 as my GT, but didn't renew after the first year. It's still unavailable to register, which is how long? 4 years or more?

So I'm pretty sure no would be the answer.
