Do I have to have 1080p to run BR movies?

Do I? My TV goes to 1080i maximum. I haven't studied BR movies at all, but I saw Terminator 2 Region A1 and I wouldn't mind getting it. It says 1080p on the front of the box. I'm using a component cable too, as HDMI messes with my PS1 games.

    Kept you waiting, huh?

No you don't as the machine will downscale, but you probably need to use HDMI if they're already using HDCP.

Should run fine in 1080i, think the PS3 downscales 720p only displays (eg. smaller monitors) to 480p however.

I bought a UK Blu Ray movie from HMV today (Hostel) and it worked! Blu Ray also runs fine at 1080i for me thru HDMI.

A UK Blu Ray worked on an import console? Surprising considering they are supposed to be region locked and the region for Europe is different to US/Japan.

EDIT - just checked a few discs on Amazon and they are listed as 'All Regions'. Has region coding been abandoned for the format then? Great news if so.

No its just the early players don't use it yet

I think it might be the other way around: early discs aren't locked, I guess while the format is young and trying to battle the currently region-free HD-DVD format.

Japan is the same region for 'normal' DVDs, but a Jap PS3 won't play a PAL region 2 disc.

For Blu Ray, Japan is Region 1, the same as the US, whereas we're region 1 with the rest of Europe.

That made no sense to me...

From what I gather of the first part, the PS3 has phucked up its DVD region coding.

From the second part, there are two independent 'Region 1', leading to a confusing scenario of not knowing whether your player can play it, even though your player supports region 1. Shouldn't they have called Europe Region 2 or something?

Was my interpretation correct, or could you please clarify?

                          Regarding a JPN machine:
For DVDs it is region 2 NTSC. It will not play PAL region 2 DVDs.
For Blu Ray it is region A. (US is also region A)

BR uses a lettering system, DVD uses a numbering system.
