PStwo - this disc could not be read

Just opened up Okami (US import) and stuck it in my Matrix infinity moded PStwo silver slimline, to be greeted with the message "this disc could not be read" on the inverntory screen (where the memory cards are displayed.)

I thought I must have found a US game which didn't work with the chip or something similar. Went to grab a couple of other US games - SotC and Katamari Damacy. They don't work either. Surely PAL games must still work? Nope!

The machine worked fine the last time I used it (I think it was a jap version of Rez), but has been out of service for about a month before today. I've no idea how to fix this problem.

    Please help.

EDIT: Just tried turning off the mod-chip and playing a DVD - neither worked, so I'm guessing this is some kind of hardware problem like the laser being mis-aligned :'(

I'm guessing that your PStwo has the model number SCPH-70003 or 70004?

If so then it's first release of the PStwo which has laser problems seriously hightened when modded. There are a number of Fixes that include extra diodes etc but if they haven't been added when the machine has been modded then thats why it's probably died.

I don't know what version number it is. How can I find out?

EDIT: just checked, and yes - it is 70003

      :?

Just found out about the diagnostic mode as mentioned in the ign guide above and I've tried a couple of games - one PAL and one NTSC - and they both work *w00t!* but only through this mode - a soft reset stops it working again.

Any more help would be appreciated.

Cool, Well i'm out then, I've never EVER seen the diagnostic mode work.

The symptoms you first described is that the DVD laser is FuBaReD. I'm guessing CD's and Games that have a black(ps1) or blue(ps2) base still work.

Yes - it would appear that CD based media works fine regardless of diagnostic mode. I tried Rez and it worked off the bat.

If only there was a way to stick diagnostic mode on permenantly. I can't understand what has caused this.
