Xbox 360 wireless adapter connection prob

Just got my first 360 today and picked up a wireless adapter for pain free online action but no ....it recognises my PC but fails on stage 3 of the media test, i've a netgear router and my my ISP is aol, my DS connects fine so i've really no idea what to do, i've had a search online and there seems to be a lot of issues with this adapter

Ok i've dragged the 360 and TV downstairs to connect to the router with the ethernet cable, set it all up.....it got to stage 4 on the test and failed, i pressed the info and it said i need to download windows media connect from xbox .com which i started to do, it got to the bit which says your xbox needs to be authorised and then i get a error message come up, it says i can manually authorise by going to control panel on my PC but because i didn't fully download media connect there is nothing to do!

Mysterious, am i missing somethig simple here? Some help please.

Are you trying to get your PC and 360 synched up? can your 360 get online without trying to link it to the PC?

I have my PC (running XP) hooked up to my DG834G wirelessly, and my 360 is hooked up via the cable, both work fine - I don't have a wireless 360 wotsit though. Turn off your routers security while you hook the 360 up and see if it'll connect (PC doesn't need to be on) if you can connect to live then you know the router's working and it'll just be a matter of re-enabling security and populating the 360 network settings manually. If not then we'll take it from there.

Yep i got onto live through the ethernet cable so i know the router works, so how do i re-enable the security to let the adapter work? Thanks for your help i'm a bit of noob when it comes to "coughs"....advanced tech stuff :-) so you'll have to explain it in simple terms!! Cheers anyway.

My cousin has just got a 360 and a wireless adapter but twice in as many days it has lost all the network settings and the light on the adapter has gone red. The router is set to not broadcast the SSID and the PS3 in the same house doesn't lose any of the network settings.

Any ideas? Is it a faulty adapter?

The 360 seems to be really picky about using WPA2 PSK security with wireless routers. Stick with WPA.

Thanks. It's using just WPA but I think it might be a firmware issue with the router so will try one that I know works problem free with Live, when I can get over there again and see how it performs after that.

It's odd that the 360 loses all the network details though, surely it would remember the last network it connected too much like the Media function remembers the last device you connected to.
