    To many opticals...

    Ok i've a problem...
too many inputs all using optical.

    XBOX
    XBOX360
    PS2
    PS3
    SKY+

So i just got a DVDR that has bumped up my requirements to 6, as my last DVD used the spare coax

My amp has 2 optical inputs and i've already got a 4 way (powered) in one of them.

    I've seen these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/optical-tos-sp...QQcmdZViewItem
    Are they any good?
And can you have 2 inputs going into 1? As most say 1 input to 2 sources!

Do your amp support HDMI - you can use HDMI to reduce need of Optical. I would use stereo sound for XBOX if you need to reduce it by one.

The good news is, if you are able to do the simplist soldering, you can easily add digital coax to your Xbox AV breakout cable. I did it recently and it involves soldering only two wires to the underside of where the optical connection attaches to the PCB board.

I think you want a switcher rather than a splitter. Isn't the one you link to for duplicating an existing signal?

I have a super cheap "SoundLAB" 3 to 1 manual switch and it works fine.

Heck, I just use one of these and it works lovely http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tv...ml?id=eCz48gif

But being manual switching, it's not very living room friendly.

As for the one topic starter posted, are these things bidirectional?

As in mushing two audio streams in to one? Don't think that would work.

I have that same switch, Jake, with a different badge. Weighs about 10 grams but it does get the job done.

It's light, but much bigger than expected, it did surprise me.

I see no point in keeping the PS2 optical output, as you don't use it as a DVD player. Also, the DVDR, does it record 5.1 from Sky? (assuming the sky box has 5.1 digital audio, I don't know) If it's not the case, I would go the analog way for it and Sky+, too

I use the Ps2 for region 1 DVDs (component and optical) as all my others are region 2, apart from modded Xbox (connected via VGA and optical) which i use for media centre etc.

Sky+ does indeed have an optical, RGB scart and S-video. Movies are 5.1 i think, not sure just got it a week ago.
DVDR is connected to Sky+ via RGB scart. DVDR connected to TV via component and using optical out for sound, soon to be HDMI when my leads show up for my HDMI 4way. But will keep optical as my amp dosen't have HDMI only my TV has it

Maplins (UK) do a similar toslink splitter to the one ^ shown. It is meant for splitting one output into two but specifically states it works the other way round as long only one connected device is used at a time, of course. But there might be a problem with it as regards the XBox. There's a thread about it on the Cables and Interconnects board at avforums.com.

What does the xbox do that gives a prob?
I'm running a VGA adaptor which has a optical out.

Both inputs that id be using wouldn't both be on at the same time, does that help?

my new cd player 3 coax and 3 optical inputs - you could use it like a switch box

pity it costs a little more than a £1.50 toslink splitter

The issue with Maplins splitter may just be an isolated incident rather than some inherent design issue. Those who've been using other similar splitters for the same sort of task have reported no trouble. Eventually I found that a splitter branded/manufactured(?) by Electrovision is the one being used, apparently successfully, by a number of different people. Google "toslink splitter" and you should easily find a supplier - that's what I did.

Just found myself in the same boat as my PS3 was arriving.

My amp is quite old and has only one optical input. Previously I only connected one system to it (was my Xbox at first then just the 360) so it wasn't a problem.

This is where this little beauty came in to its own once again

If you're using component the Audio Authority not only automatically switches over the inputs for you, but also does the same with the audio meaning you can connect everything up and put it out of the way.

It's a bit more expensive than some options (around ?100 at the current exchange rate) but it's proven to be worth every penny I've paid for it in the last few years in not having to mess around with flicking input switches and diving into the mess of wires behind my AV unit.
