I think I just killed my sisters PC...

Hi guys, I've just done something bad. She was given a PC by my grandparents which she has been excited about for months, went over to sort it out for her yesterday and set it up to run Firefox, work wirelessly etc. Booted it up and it all worked but ran as slow as a dead duck.

So I went through the programs and started uninstalling them all (years of crap), after a restart however the PC reboots and windows starts but comes up with 'cannot find windows explorer, please reinstall windows'. Thought that was ok, would try to boot to disk- but unfortunatly there didn't seem to be an option to do that when the BIOS thing loads up.

Also, the CD drive doesn't open when you press open, and I can't hear the disc spinning at all. I opened it with the 'pin hole' trick and cleaned the install disc but it still does nothing, and on bootup there is no visual 'boot from disc' option. I have an external CD Drive of my own that I tried on the PC via USB but still no luck- it was seemingly not detected.

If anybody has any advice that would be nice, as I'm feeling like bit of an idiot right now! Also, it may be of note that the PC is running Windows ME *shudder*

    Thanks!

Mhmmm...killing the PC surely put an end to its misery.
BTW, whiel you're at it, search for a Win98 SE CD and install it...if the PC is able to boot from CD. If it runs ME it should be able to use the optical drive as a boot unit, but it would be basically impossible for it to recognize an USB as a bootable device.
Try to find out the motherboard used and bios version, I'm pretty sure you can dig up where the boot sequence is in the BIOS.

Seriously, ME is the worst piece of software I've ever seen. I installed Windows 2000 on my brother's ME machine. It took forever, but it was worth it in the end. I think ME uses the FAT32 file system, whereas 2000/XP etc use NTFS. I had to reformat the hard drive 4 or 5 times before I successfully got Win2000 on there.

You might need to reinstall the operating system. (Don't forget to back up
        anything important)

You have deleted important registry files in your attempt to ccure it I am afraid.

What make is it, as toshiba pc's you have to press c and hold it down to get it to boot from cd.

There is always a way my friend but if it is a laptop you may need to download a utilities disk as well.

Grab a cheap IDE CD-ROM, you can probally get one used or new for under a tenner. Replace the busted one with that, then it's a case of getting a Windows XP disc from somewhere, and installing it.

If you want to boot from CD, just enter CMOS setup and set CD-ROM as the first boot device, with HDD coming after it.

Concerning drivers, chances are since it's old, the drivers will already be on the XP disc, if not just crack the PC open and see what brand/model the parts are.

I wasn't talking about drivers, I was talking about laptop specific utilities such as touch pad programs.

The drivers part of my post was to do with the fact it's an old machine, and if Haribokart did manage to get XP installed on the PC, most video/sound drivers would probably come with XP. I wasn't replying to you Mofoman.
