Intel Core Duo - 32 or 64 bit OS?

    Hi chaps,

I'm a traitor! I've been building my PC's with AMD chips for over 5 years now but after seeing the latest benchmarks I decided to bit a git and migrate.

One thing I can't seem to find out anywhere, is if the Intel Core Duo runs, and benefits from a x64 OS. My previous system was an Athlon 64 (2 core) and I had been using x64 XP and then x64 Vista with it happily. I know that the Core Duo is x64 bit, but some (old) posts I can find around the internet say it won't work with vista x64 at all (well, Longhorn - that's how old the posts are).

Anybody care to enlighten me to the ways of the dark side?

As far as I know the Core Duo will run x64 XP under boot camp. It is recognised as a regular Intel x64 bit processor.
I have'nt tried boot camp myself, prefer the benifits of Parallels. I would'nt mind using boot camp for a bit of gaming, as Parallels cannot handle any 3d.

There's a wiki page on it here

I'm talking about a Windows PC rather than a Mac, but I guess if a mac can run x64 on it, it can run x64. I know with the athlons you get around a 4% performance boost with x64 over standard XP, just wanted to know if it was the same with intels in which case i'd go for Vista x64.

Intel Core 2 Duo supports 64Bit operating systems through EMT64 . As far as I am aware the Intel Core Duo does not though.

Could you actually mean the Intel Core 2 Duo ?.I have an E6300 Allendale and tested VISTA RC2 ( x64 ) and it performed perfectly well. The only issue down to available drivers and security software at the time.

mainly I use a 64bit Unix OS , and have also tested the 32bit version. Personally for day to day use the difference is not that noticeable. When you come to compiling , working with digital video encoding , HD playback or managing large databases then you start to notice the benefits.

the core 2 duos will run vista must have been a very old build that didn't work with them.

they will be much better than your athlon as well

            It's a Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.67GHz.

Sweet, I'll get Vista x64 OEM for it then. Thanks for the info. Like I mentioned, I'm already using x64 and all the software I need works on it (and drivers) so no need to go back to 32bit unless the intel chip was faster with it.

have you thought about getting a E6600 instead of the E6700 a lot cheaper and its very easy to overclock them to higher speeds so you will save cash and get the same speed cpu with a little overclock.
