Get the Ultimate version, it is by far the superior operating system and has all the stuff you need for the upcoming five years. It has support for multiple processor setup's and also has the advantage of having superior networking functions to premium. The Oem version is only forty quid dearer than Premium so the best choice is Ultimate.
Personally I think you should buy the version that suits your needs and your hardware at this moment in time. Yeah, ultimate supports multiple CPUs and whatnot, but bearing in mind the OEM copy you refer to is tied to the motherboard you activate it on this is irrelevant, unless you already own hardware with these features. Networking features such as remote desktop can be done via other software too.

they will have exclusive update's for the ultimate version of Vista that will not be available or usueable on any other version of Vista
Hehe, yeah... 3D Solitaire? Personally I am doubtful as to whether any must have extras will appear.

I'll have to side with Shakey_Jake here I'm afraid, that being if you need Ultimate features at a later date you can just upgrade your current version... there is little reason to buy it over home premium right now, unless there is something it offers that you just can't live without. Daresay in 3 or 4 years time, ultimate will be the version to go for, but right now it's hard to justify.

About the OEM thing - remember that if your motherboard dies or something and you need to replace it, it'll count as a new one, and your copy of Vista will be rendered invalid.

Though on the other hand, I've heard that if you call them up and explain your situation/whine a bit, they'll unlock it for you.

I reckon I'll get OEM Home Premium. I've just bought a quad-core/SLi compatible motherboard so I should hopefully get a couple of years use out of that with just CPU and graphics card upgrades.

Can I reinstall it as often as I want on my PC? I know I can't put it on any other setup, but are there any other limits to the OEM versions which might annoy me?

You can reinstall as much as you want. If you do hit activation problems, you just give them a call.

how does it find out what motherboard you using? didn't realise it would isolate itself to the hardware on your pc. i will upgrade in the future, seems like a bit of a con. everyone has to upgrade their pc eventually.

It's no different to XP. XP did the same thing.

                Hi Guys,

I'm getting a new PC built for me next week which will happily run Vista, only problem is I'm not sure some of the programs I'll need to use (such as 3ds max) will run on Vista. XP and Vista will cost about the same so would I better with Windows XP for the time being?

                Thanks

If your not actually fussed about what OS you use as long as it works, stick with XP as that's the most compatible OS at the mo.

But if your anything like me, you'd want Vista anyway :P
It's early days for Vista, most stuff works fine, but the stuff that doesn't is still in the 'fixing for Vista' stage.

Yeah thought as much, to be honest I'd like Vista because it's shiny, but work dictates the fact I need something that runs everything now. I'd hate to spend all this money on a new PC to find the programs I've bought it for don't work properly. XP it is then.

Someone might know if the specific apps you use will work, mind. Vista support is only going to increase.
