    Tv & 360 question.

A friend of mine has asked me why he can only get a black and white picture on his tv when he selects 60hz?

I have not seen the box or been round there, but he said he's using a component connection, and the tv is a 5 yr old Pioneer 42 inch.

    TIA

if the tv does not support 6o hz it will generally not pick anything up. bit confussing this one as its in black and white, when i had a situation llike this a few years back i got a pal scart convertor and it went from black and white to colour, it cost me about 10 pounds from a electrical retalier. not sure but woth a go, or check his tv setting??????

Is he sure it's a component connection and not composite?

A stable, and otherwise perfect, picture but in black and white is a sign that the TV can accept a 60hz signal but does not like the NTSC colour signal.

The usual way around this is to use an RGB/Component Cable whereby the colour system is irrelevant.

I suspect Chad is right in that he is using composite.

Just spoke to him on the phone, and he is saying he used the red, green and blue plugs, and the red and white for sound. So sounds like Component basically.

I asked him where he put the plugs, and he called it out as rgb1,even though it has the component plugs. Would it be possible that he has component inputs that only accept rgb,(if this is possible)?

It seems it is an old industrial panel,as he said it as loads of sockets on the back. Im going to post a picture of it in a minute.

Thanks for the help so far

It could be a faulty 360 it's quite common for it to happen.
Quite a few people had there 360 go from PAL60 to black and white 60hz overnight.
              RGB does cure it though.

He sent me some pix but they were horrendously out of focus so i'm just waiting for another to post up.

Iirc there were R G and B plugs, and VD and HD. Any ideas?

If these plugs were component wouldn't they say Yb........and all that? (can remember the lingo!)

Right so i went to my friends house to try to sort this out. The tv is basically a panel, the type used in conferences and exhibitions.

Went home again to get my Dreamcast and vga box,as thought this may work, and it's the only thing i have that outputs vga.

Plugged in via a 15 pin socket, under the input rgb2,and all i got was a thin flickering line at the very bottom of the screen, and NO SYNC on the screen. Found a minute switch next to the input on the tv called SYNC,flicked it,still the same line.

                  Click

Here is the way he has it plugged in at the moment, which gives a perfect picture in PAL 60 mode, but completely green, and a normal picture in PAL 50,so he can't play GoW.

This input is labelled rgb 1,so is it technically component?

The only other hope i think is this, which is labelled RS232c? Is this another term for vga?

                  TIA

I'm pretty sure that is just another way of connecting VGA, my old CRT PC monitor had the same set of connections.

The only problem with that input was the bolt holes on it,as the female vga plug i wanted to put into it had them aswell,as opposed to the screws to go into them. Guess i may need an adaptor to go between them.

Isn't RS232c some sort of data transfer modem type thingy-me-bob?

Been googling, and i think it is a vga connector. Just need to change the gender of the plug.

Oh, the reason I thought that is I recently needed to buy a RS232 cable so I could transfer firmware data between my PC and a cable box.
