    PS2 Scratching discs

Having a bit of a problem with my PS2. All my discs, and I take good care of them, tend to get easily scratched. I'm sure its my console thats doing it, I brought a copy of god of war recently, it was lightly scratched when I got it (2nd hand) now after just finishing it and taking it out of my PS2 for the first time since, i'm sure its a lot more scratched than it was before. My consoles modded (can't remember what chip i'm afraid) - is that known to cause problems? - or are some PS2's just prone to doing this?

Really annoying - this is why I prefer carts!

Back when I had a original style PS2, it would scratch some of my discs... which I was not happy about (circular scratches towards the outer edge of the disc). This was only with PS2 cd-based media though (blue discs), didn't happen with dvds or PSX games so I guess it was due to the high rotation speed the drive uses for PS2 cds.

My new modded slimline machine I bought a month ago doesn't have the same issue though. What model do you have?

Sorry for the late reply Hohum. Not sure which model I have, and as i'm not at home at the moment I can't check. But I think i've found that the problem is with dual disc games as my Xenosaga is scratched as well as God of War.

And CD based games seem to suffer as well. Guess there's nothing to do about it... although I could just make back-ups of the rarer titles as I did with my Saturn collection - it is quite a chore to do so however. This machine really has given me so many problems.

By model I meant the bulky original machine with slot loading drive, or the slimline top loading version. A chip can't cause your PS2 to scratch your discs really. All I can suggest is backing up your games and using the backups instead like you suggested, or just buying a new modded machine and getting rid of your current one.

If you opt for the latter, I'd recommend ghost2fitter.co.uk personally. The machine I bought from them turned up in mint condition, plays everything, and doesn't destroy my discs Of course, it is the more expensive option, so it depends how you want to tackle the issue. Hope you get something sorted.

Ah I see, well it is a chunky model. Looking at my PS2 collection I don't think I have anything worth more than ?30 so its not the end of the world if they do get scratched. But still annoying.

I'll probably make a few back-ups tonight anyway, i've added these ty DVDs sitting around for too long.

I've used ghost2fitter before and they were good for me indeed, but I don't think i'll be getting a new PS2 now in any case!

          Cheers for the help.

How about getting HD loader and installing all your games onto hard disc? That's another possible route, doesn't work with dual-layer DVDs though as far as I know... but you may not have any games that use that anyway.
