I don't have to press any buttons on my machine but it's Japanese and was modded ages ago (v1.38 firmware). Maybe things are different with the slimline models.
Apparently, holding the O button on controller 1 should force the machine into PS1 mode. Infinty instructions

I haven't run into that problem. I bought my machine from them too, and it has the same chip/firmware. The few PS1 games I have all seem to boot fine, however I opted for a black V15 model myself.
Try what Kubrick said, if that doesn't help then contact ghost2fitter with your problem. They are a decent bunch of people and will help you out I'm sure.

I know that some modded machines won't play PS1 games. Mine won't unless I boot it up, wait for it to give me a disc read error, and then hold the reset button for a few seconds and then try restarting the machine. Its weird I know, and tricky to do, so I still have my modded PS1 hooked up my TV to play PS1 games.
My machine was done yonks ago mind, so i'm surprised that your having this happen now with a newer chip, this was an early problem.

You could try the reset trick. Its been a few years since i've had to do it since I just use my PS1 now as I was saying. But basically, wait for it to reach the disc error (the reddish screen) then hold the reset button for about 5 secs before restarting and for some reason the game then boots. Its tricky to do and usually takes me a few goes, but you might want to give it a try. I'm not sure if it works for any modded PS2 which won't play PS1 games or just with the chip I have.
Might be worth using a rubbish game by the way, as you could end up scratching the disc if you're constantly restarting the machine like that.
