Force Dreamcast to run in 60Hz?

I have a PAL Dreamcast with a modchip installed. The japanese games I have run in 50Hz and with black borders on the top and bottom. The games themselve do not seem to run slower than they should, but I don not like the borders and the fact that the games do not run in the mode they were created. Is there a way to force the Dreamcast to run in 60Hz, maybe through a hardware mod? I do not like to swap discs.

What do you think about this project, may it enable 60Hz on japanese games?

Yup, this works a treat. I have a pal machines flashed to now be a Jap machine. Takes about 2 mins to do the solderign (very simple) and run the disc ad there you go.

    Cheers

Wonderful!! But will I be able to run PAL-games as well as I have a mod chip in my Dreamcast, if I convert my Dreamcast to JAP?

Is it the "1ST_READ.BIN" that I should burn? I suppose that I only need to solder the +12V to the R512 as the R422-mod is only for US Dreamcasts?

I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to get PAL games working, I have a modded US console that runs PAL games fine, apart from the 50hz locked stuff but taht only applies to about 3-4 titles.

Does anyone know if this can be done on a NTSC JAP DC to display 50Hz?
They only talk about a PAL machine...

          EDIT: nevermind, translated and understood.

I have performed the mod and my Dreamcast is now japanese! It works like a charm.

Here you have a directlink to a CDI-image:

Sorry to somewhat hijack this thread but this seems a good time to ask - what is now the best Dreamcast console to get?

A while ago I read that the best would be an NTSC machine with a modchip and the 'R422 mod'. But now with the ability to flash the Dreamcast and change the region is this still the case now?

Which Dreamcast would now have the best compatability with the best picture for each regions games? (eg all 60hz full screen, if possible)

...and what is the '+12V to the R512' mod? I have not heard of this before!

Last quick question - what was the latest/last revision of the Dreamcast modchip and where is the best place to get it?
                TIA

Hmmm, well, I got two JAP DC's at the moment, one's with a modchip installed.
I play a lot of homebrew, and the 3 latest DLs (Battletoads, BoR Last and The Sandman) and some browser discs don't boot on any of these. BUT they work flawless on a PAL machine. I don't know why this is, but I'm gonna try to change 1 of the JAPs to PAL to check if this works.

EDIT: I translated the entire manual, gonna post soon along with some others!

Is there a difference between the modchips?

-In general, all of the modchips are the same. There may be different makes, but, I think the difference is in the wiring. Personally, I've come across two to three different wirings.

What would be extremely handy is a new modchip with some plug-ins, just as with the GameCube. These would obviously be: DivX playback, MP3 playback and V-CD playback. I've asked about this on two dev-sites already, but no response. Maybe Dan Potter could, as he did something similar before...

-The 12V is needed to activate the flash to another "region mode".

Well I remember there used to be a 26 wire modchip, which was replaced with a 5 wire modchip, and then a 4 wire, but all do the same thing - allow you to play imports. See here for more:-

When I mentioned the 'R422 mod' I meant this:-

Im still not sure which Dreamcast would be the 'ultimate' now though for compatability/picture etc

                        Anybody know?

                          http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/sega/dc-ntsc-pal.htm
This mod is very easy to do, it's also implemented in my modchip guide.
(Ah, he finally updated this page after probably having noticed there's a decent modchip tut around? )

Any DC can actually output all the video signals, so no need to worries about a certain model there...
The "ultimate" cannot be bought, you have to make it.
-Reset button anyone? Lookielookie ( bit outdated now, did a small grammar update today )
-Overclock also performed, but no success, was a bad chrystal I guess, my tutorial for that one is coming soon if successful.

EDIT: that chip on mmmonkey's is the one from the robwebb store I think, looks different doesn't it?
