Sound upgrade finally picked and bought, now I just have to set it all up! I suppose i'd better do some overtime at work this week too, to offset the guilt of replacing my faithful old amp and speakers after 12 fault free years. If this lot lasts half as long i'll be happy.

This is about as far as it will be going tonight though, set up on the weekend.

Gnarly kit, must see pics when set up.

How much pennies have you been parted with if you don't mind, my speakers need replacing more than one could imagine.

Cheers, only have the fronts set up for now, the difference from my old set up is astounding. I expected that though, my Celestions were over a decade old! The price wasn't too bad really, or at least I think so, I bought:

            Onkyo TX-NR609 AV amp
2 Monitor Audio BX 5 floor standers
2 Monitor Audio BX 2 shelf speakers
            1 Monitor Audio BX centre
2 speaker stands for the rears
            40m of quality speaker cable

All in just a bit over ?1200. (And the shop paid for my cab home!) I was happy with that, though I dare say someone else could find it all cheaper! I'm not a regular stereo upgrader, (As I said, had my last one 12 years) this will be a long, long term set up for me. To show how out of date I am, I was stupidly happy when I found the remote for the amp worked my iPod when I plugged it in to the USB. Yeah, welcome to modern times......

Yeah those Amps are ace, I got the cheapo normal 5.1 with the 3D from Richer Sounds TX-SR309. I think there was only a few budget amps I could afford at the time that supported 3D, and my room is too small for tons of speakers, most were like double the money. I think I paid about ?130, when it was on sale.

If you're talking about a sub mate, it's not missing, I don't like them. Never been a fan of tons of bass, and even if I was, it wouldn't really be fair on the people who live underneath my flat.

Best thing about living above someone else was blasting Resistance with base turned UP.

To be fair, he used to watch awful films really loud at at 2AM so karma.

Good man. Subs suck, unless you're a mad movie buff that loves bass. Decent speakers produce more than enough bass for my tastes too. Even my Creative T20 speakers do the job.

I would tend to agree, I ditched my sub 4 years back and have never missed not having one.

Subs are ideal if you dont have the space for big speakers. I really like the smaller speakers then a sub hidden away somewhere.

Subs are great if you set them up correctly. Most people bump them up. You need them turned down, subtle, to add depth to the sound. They do make a huge difference if used correctly.

I only just managed to get my stuff set up last night, have been moving furniture every which way trying to get my viewing/listening points optimised. The bass is more than sufficient for my personal taste on this kit, but the speakers are all pretty beefy. I actually had to set it as low as it would go on the amp itself. Once I finish work today it'll be hours of tweaking though, watched one film last night and the surround levels weren't quite what I wanted. I'm even going to have to read the frikkin' manual...................
