Next xmas kingston you'll be able to get yourself a nice PW8, that's going to be the plasma of kings.

007 - I think AVsales did a different stand with some plasma bundles - the straight one in my pic is the panasonic stand, but both the curved and the straight are very nice

Kingston... yep its a great plasma - not even worried about not being "futureproof" as regards to high definition TV - at the moment its giving out absolutely lovely images which I'm very happy with!

Some lovely setups there chaps, I'm waiting on AV Sales to get the new HD-Ready Panasonic plasmas in-stock so I'm future-proofed.

the rears look too close together..... or are they the centre pair in a 7.1 set up?

oh, and you only think you don't need a sub! once you hear the difference you will never be without one ever.... you will never get the full experience without one trust me, the difference is huge! (if set up correctly)
That's oh so true! I was happy with my front speakers before I got a sub. They went down to 52Hz but the in-room response was probably down to about 40Hz (careful positioning, room layout etc)

Then I got my sub and turned it on...jeez The difference was beyond anything I could imagine. It's a Velodyne CHT8 and Velodyne are very conservative with their stats. So when they say it reaches 30Hz, they mean 30Hz under the tightest possible conditions. Other manufacturers would say their comparable subs reach 18Hz or lower (cough MJ Acoustics cough). I bet my sub goes down to 20-25Hz +/- 3dB

Anyway once a sub is set up properly you can't even hear the crossover point...it just happens as the speakers cut off and the sub takes over. It isn't boomy, it isn't too loud, and it isn't a heavy bass note every second. Or at least it shouldn't be. It fills in the gaps of the other speakers and (I don't know how) it improves the sound of the other speakers as they are left to focus on the midrange (80Hz upwards)

There's too many misconceptions about HC/hifi subs, IMO, and I blame the chavs and the car hifi industry Stick two 10" drivers in a 3ft square box, turn all the EQ up to max and hope for the best

I got some new rears this week so I'll take a pic and put it up tonight. tbh I'm tempted to buy a new AV stand. Bit of an audiophile question but does anyone have experience with using amplifiers on glass racks? How does it affect the sound? I've heard it makes everything sound less refined and tinny...is that true, or more AV bull?

Its absolute bull - I stop reading Hi-Fi/Home Cinema mags once they start seriously reviewing AV stands and commenting on the difference in sounds they make...

Thought it would be There's a really nice 4-tier hifi stand for about ?70 in Comet iirc. I might go later and take a proper look at it (measure things up etc)

                  Cheers

Most Hifi stuff is bull, IMO. And the stuff that isn't snakeoil only applies on such a small scale that any normal person can't even hear the difference

I agree, it's all bull ****!! Even with regards to subs going lower than 20hz, whats the point? The audable frequency range of the human ear only goes down to 20hz and thats if you have perfect hearing!

With regards to AV stands, Speaker cable, mains silencers etc, it's all down to Pyschoacoustics i.e i've just spent ?200 per metre on my speaker cable therefore i can hear a difference between that and ?5 per metre.

If you have that kind of outlook on audio equipment then you will never be happy with your system.

                      Exactly.

I think people should relax - not think about what things cost, just that they like the look/sound of them and sit back and enjoy

                      Comment

That's my attitude to it. I've spent a lot of time, effort and money on my system and I love it. But I know, in relative terms, I haven't spent a fraction of what most people spend on their systems. It doesn't bother me - I'm happy with what I've got. I'm not going to start pissing and moaning because my speakers are rear-ported or because I don't have a prog. scan TV and I especially don't care about all the bull**** that goes alongside AV. Directional audio cables? Jitter-free optical leads? ?8000 p/m speaker cable? **** that

Now that I've bought these new speakers, it's practically 'complete' now ie I've reached the stage where I am happy to not upgrade for another 5-6 years tbh. I want this new stand though really to just tidy things up and give me more room. A glass display rack looks far nicer than a set of wooden shelves btw this is the stand I want. ?70 is a bargain for one that looks this nice...considering people spend ?6000+ on a glass stand

There was this real nice stand on Avforums the other day ?0?5800 it cost him, I wanted it because it looked so pretty.

So RLench, what speakers and other gear do you have?

When I get my first place, i'm going to have a nice Panasonic Plasma, arcam system, with in wall speakers throughout. That's my dream set up.

                          Comment

I do think Prog Scan is slightly different to audio as it does make a big difference in picture quality. I don't have a prog scan set myself and don't intend buying one for at least another 12 months, but once the next generation kicks in and games are completely designed not to have interlace I won't be able to ignore it.

PS2 games are generally not progressive scan, cube games are still designed for interlaced sets and just have the interlace removed on prog scan compatible games, xbox on the otherhand I'm starting to think games look so blurry because they're designed for a higher resolution than my TV set allows. Outrun 2 looks stunning in progressive, it looks cack in comparison on my interlace set

                              Amp - Marantz SR4200

Speakers - Mission M32 (fronts), Mission M7C1 (centre), Mission M31i (rears), Velodyne CHT8

Although atm I've got the M31is at the front so they'll run in quicker...big problem is that they sound better than the M32s The M3i range are a big improvement over the M3 range...so much so that I can already hear a difference

Far from an excellent system but it was on a tight budget. tbh I don't think I could have had a better system for the price I paid (the front speakers were the only thing I paid anywhere close to RRP!)

heh I was a cheap bastard on sound :P I have a Samsung HTDM150 5.1DTS home theatre kit capable of Pro Logic 2, does for me. Was only pro logic 2 kit I could find for under ?300 at the time I bought it. I've had it a couple of years now mind.
