    PS2 vertical position

Just wanted to know whether placing the PS2 vertically makes any difference to the lifespan of the console effectiveness or not?

Because i know a long while back during early in the Playstation era, that the when playing the launch machine for hours until end the laser got knackered and games either could not load/took ages to load. To get it working better, you had to place the console on the side and it would read the disks.

Recently i'm having a few disk read errors i think, where i hear the lens drive trying to read the disk, then the lens drive clicks/skips like mad. Doesn't happen very often, so i have to reset. Mainly happens when i haven't played the PS2 for a few days.

Would placing the console on its side get rid of the DRE's for the time being? or is the console shafted.

I bought the PS2 last year, around April time - so it should be a V5 i think. It has been messiah modded and have not played any copies on it from when it was modded (April) to May this year, when i got some patched WE6 FE's.

The first time i noticed the DRE's was around the end of feb this year when it messed up on WE6 FE (legit version) The first time and the only time i've played the patched WE6 FE's was around May so i'll discount playing patched/copied games as to why im getting DRE's.

it could just be a dirty lens ?

have you tried one of those cd lens cleaners that might solve the problem

Yep, i tried a couple of CD cleaners, and i don't know whether that does cure the problem straight up.

As mentioned before, the problem doesn't occur that frequently at all to really grate me - still annoying nontheless. Just after a few days of non-usage of the console, and the PS2 locking up problem starts again. Once the console is in regular use (a few hours a day, everyday) it's fine.

Though standing your PS2 vertically shouldnt cause any problems, its generally not that advisable. Unless you are seriously strapped for space under/arround your telly you should leave it lying flat.

I think it may cause the DVD lazer to become slightly misaligned. Its happened to my older PS2 and now that no longer reads DVD's properly (still fine with games though).

The fact that a period of non-use causes the problem could suggest that there is some grime on the DVD motor mechanisim causing it to stick when it gets a chance to settle.
If its DVD playback is fine then it probably wont be the lazer causing the problem.
