Wi-fi hardware may be disabled/switched off.

Check your BIOS settings....and your manual.
Some laptops have Wi-fi disabled in the BIOS and it's up to the user to enable it..
The manual should tell you which function keys to press to toggle the Wi-fi on/off....eg Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F10+A wee button with a funny symbol on it.

Yeppers, this is true of the Laptops I have, but theyre a Switch on the front of the machine . and Bah! to Vista, it runs like a pig on cheaper low power laptops, its a useless upgrade.
