XBox DVD Picture Flicks Light and Dark! - Help!

Original problem solved. Like Saurian said, it was in S-Video mode. I'm an idiot... I thought that I had checked that. Oh well... Thanks for the help - all of you

    New Question! - 14/7/03

My friend has an XBox, unmodded PAL which he uses as a DVD player. I assume that he is using the default composite lead that comes with the console, I think he's got the Phillips drive in the console (From vague description).

When he plays games the picture is fine, but when he plays DVDs apparently the screen gets brighter and darker every few seconds: "Like the sun keeps hitting the sceen and going again!"

I'm going to give him my composite lead, see if that works... He said that he's tried wiggling the leads and stuff... it's just still not working properly...

The fact that it plays games fine is the weird thing!

    Any ideas?

wiggle the conectors on the lead around and see if that helps, I had to wedge a piece of plastic in between the av output socket and lead on my dreamcast as the rgb lead just used to give a green hue otherwise.

Once i did turn my xbox on and it was all green, girlfriend suggested the scart wasn't in properly, i told her if the scart wasn't in there wouldn't be any picture.. turned it off, back on again, still green.

in the end the scart was half-unplugged.. dont you just hate it when girlfriends are right?

doubt thats much help, but it may point to some damage on your RGB scart, try another one. i wouldn't have thought it'd be your xbox.

btw, i hope this isnt some wind-up about the colour scheme of the microsoft dash

I had a green Dreamcast screen once. Change RGB scart, problem solved.

Your RGB cable must be set to S Video - if it is like the one I have, setting it to S Video will turn the screen green.

On a slightly side-related note, I've noticed something weird with my DC.

I'm sure it's not just my imagination, but I think my RGB cable has gone a wee bit strange, as when I switch it on there's slight masking of the image, like the colours are ever so slightly streaking across the screen. (Kind of like a very faint visual echo.)

Trouble is, I'm not sure whether it is the cable or my DC base unit, because the RF cable the machine came with also displayed a really distorted image when I tried it.

I'd previously just assumed this was magnetic feedback from the equipment in my room.

Anyone else experienced subtle visual distortions with the DC?

I was experiencing a similar thing with all my consoles - until I switched the Sky box off, at which point it vanished...

But that's the thing though. I'm running all my consoles in to 2 separate scart splitters, so I don't think it's because I've got anything switched or wired in that I shouldn't have.

And every other console is fine. But my DC... Ever so slightly off.

As much as I love the console, it's niggly with problems. If I have to change it, then I'll be going on for my third DC.

I had to change the first because two of the sound channels seemed to conk out.

It's never big problems with the DC. Only small and annoying.

Thanks Saurian. I've got the problem fixed now. It was in S-Video.

                      There's a new question now -

Is he connecting the Xbox via a VCR or other recording device? It sounds like Macrovision (DVD copy protection) is kicking in.

If it's a copied DVD, and the source machine had macrovision it would cause the brightness pulsing thing. Use an original.

I'm pretty sure it's an original. I think he said it was for all his DVDs!
