    New computer network problems

    Hi

I'm usually ok with computers but have always struggled with network stuff.

I just bought myself a nice new quad core pc to replace an old one.

Basically I removed my old pc from my network and replaced it with the new one. Same network cable.

I have a Belkin router but now I get an amber light corresponding to my new computer on it wheras it was green for my old one.

I can't connect to the internet with it, or set up a network with my other computer / 360.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks for any help.

Possibly amber light just indicated a different speed , Is your new network card possibly a 100Mb or even Gigabit Lan?. I think Green on Belkins represents 10Mb.

Althpugh this still doesn't explain no internet access.

Personally , if I could still access the router/gateway I would note down my ISP details and then perform a factory reset.
Start from scratch so to speak.

First, open the command prompt and write "ping localhost" (or ping 127.0.0.1). If the ping is successful, ping your router (usually 192.168.0.1, but you'll have to check your network settings) and see what happens.
If the first ping is failed, it's a problem with tour network card; it's either not recognized by the system, disabled or malfunctioning.
Solutions: first, check your motherboard and see if the network port you are using is controlled by an external chip (browse hardware sites for this info if you are unable to find it); if it is, it needs drivers to be properly recognized by the system. If you peek in the device manager, you should see a yellow question mark near a "network controller" device.
If there's no trace of any unrecognized/unistalled device, check for disabled or malfuncitoning devices (red dots).
Note that most motherboards now come with two ethernet ports, try plugging the cable into the second port and change the switch port to see what happens.

        Thanks for the help guys.

It was a problem with the drivers not being installed on the motherboard. I got the drivers for the Asus commando from the website and everything is working fine now 8)

        Appreciate your time fellas.
