Xbox 360 Core Game Patches

Am I right in assuming that if I have a 360 core system I don't get any of the game patches and fixes which are released over time ?

I'm not talking about downloadable content just the bug fix patches.

You still get patches, they are just saved to your memory unit.

I get the feeling this will be more of an issue in the future as the patches get more convoluted.

Does it warn you if you don't have space to install the patch, 64mb at present does not sound like a lot for patch storage.
