    Router/Switch Problem/question?

    Right heres the deal, i got a free D-Link DES-1005D when i originally joined telewest, the connection is as follows.

    Cable Modem ----> D-Link Switch ----> PC, 360, PS3

    all the cables are seperate, so te cable modem is ethernet to the switch, then the switch has 3 ethernet cables going to the PC, 360 and PS3.

    The problem i have is that i can only ever get 2 of the things to work at once, i can use the 360 online with the pc, but then not the PS3, in order to use the PS3 online, i have to reset the Cable Modem, then turn the 360 off and turn the PS3 on, and it works, but then the 360 wont.

    so my question is, how can i get all 3 to work together, im pretty sure ive tried editing the IP etc, but any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    so suggest away, i want this sorted now, had enough of resetting the modem!

    I'd imagine (and this is only guesswork mind) that it may have something to do with the cable modem with regards to IP and/or MAC addresses. I don't know about nowadays, but in the past cable operators only assigned one IP per connection, then when gaming became popular it was two. I think the IPs are handed down from the cable modem to the pc/consoles. This would seem to fit in with your need to reset the modem when you change configuration.

    I'd imagine in the short term your most likely options would be to either a) get a second network card in your PC, and connect one of the consoles via Internet Connection Sharing and the PC, or b) use a PC tool to 'clone' the mac address from one of your consoles to your PC's network card.

    As I said above though, this is all dependent on what the cause of the problem actually is, and whether cable operators still work in the same way.

      It is something to do with it being a network switch, which does something different to a router I do believe.

      Does your Cable modem have an ethernet port and a USB socket?
      If so I imagine that the modem will only dish out 2 IP address at any one time then the switch is sending them out to 2 devices.

        it was my assuption though that i could make a network of sorts?

        so that say my base ip address for my pc was 127.0.0.1, that i could make the 360 127.0.0.2 and the ps3, 127.0.0.3? or do i need a router for this instead of a switch? im confident at the changing of the ip, etc etc. so do i just have the wrong gear?

          I'm pretty sure that you need a router as opposed to a switch.
