i used to get them from certain peer to peer programs i installed, damn annoying, i used a pop up killer that worked best part of the time, try a search for that on google,

Or use opera. Which has an option to turn off popups.

A popup killer is one way of solving the problem, but if the ad banners are appearing all the time, chances are you have a piece of software like "GAIN" installed. These irritating applications download adverts to your machine all the time. Sometimes, the only way to un-install them is to do some registry editing.

If you want a decent ad killer though, "Ad aware", and "Adsgone" are both excellent.

As does Mozilla Firebird. It also has the ability to block images from certain servers, so you can get rid of most ad banners.

If you like using IE, try google's new pop-up blocker.
