    Ps3 wifi a bit meh???

I have never gone wifi for gameing ever as i feel it cant be trusted. I had been running my jpn ps3 off a wired network since launch without any hicups what so ever. Fast forward to now and i have now also a uk system of course which comes with wifi inside. Now i have a half decent netgear wireles router and the ps3 is a mere 5 ft away i thought i would use the wifi this time as i have ran out of ethernet ports on the router. Heres where the problems lie, i often get dropped from the psn, i have seen more lag in the past few days than i have the previous four months with the wired ps3, and the network is reporting a signal of only 50% strength huh from 5 ft away how is this possible. Have i just confirmed my long time thoughts of wifi is ****e for gameing or is my router/ps3 borked.

Sounds like it knackered. My DS works on the other side of the house and my laptop works down the other end of the garden. (3Com router)

Hmmm i might invest in a better router then, i thought it was a tad strange how i was getting only 50% strength when the router and ps3 are mor eor less ontop of each other.

I have the netgear DG834G router upstairs in the bedroom while my PS3 is located in the livingroom. I have a constant 100% connection.
Hopefully it's a problem with your router and not the PS3.

The fact that your PS3 is connecting to your router would indicate the PS3 is working ok but your router for some reason is not giving out 100% signal. Do you have a psp or laptop that you could try and see what signal strength you get to them?

              I agree, the ps3 and wi-fi is ****e.

I have my 360 in the lounge running seamlessly and a Wii next to it, I've played hours of rock solid pgr3 over wi-fi with not a hint of problem, and full voice. i've downloaded 1gb+ demos in one hit with no drop out.

stick the ps3 next to it and it took me 3hours to download the 1.6 update and it drops the connection every few seconds and won't hook back on, reading forums I see possible solutions fiddling with dns settings and the like but so far can't be arsed to knacker my router settings for the ps3.

a console is sposed to be plug and play, end of, thats the great triumph of the x360 and live to me, it just works.

until something killer comes on the ps3 shop going to leave it for the time being.

I have a Netgear wireless router, and the signal strength to my 360 and PS3 varies daily, but they are a maximum of 12ft from each other, and on the same level.

Think that's just how it is.

                Why 2 PS3's?

Uk/jpn one bluray regions etc. Hmm so others are getting various results on the netgear and ps3. I like the router as its easy to use and i also dont want to mess with settings to change this i suppose i will have to bite the bullet and just get on with it.

Not had a problem with my japan ps3 on wifi with the netgear DG834G router.

Perhaps try changing the channel that you have set for the router and see if that makes any difference.

I get as high as 67 per cent whenever I bother to check. I'm certain it's not as good as the X360 and Wii.

My downloads from the US store were average-good, but the RR7 demo from the UK took an age. I swear it was a bigger file size than the US demo though.

Strange, everything ive downloaded from the UK PS Store have been rapid. I do have a 16mb connection thou, im talkin 600mb in less than 10mins.

I've just checked and I've got a 95% signal strength I get very fast downloads from PSN (about 180k/s on a 2mb connection) and, so far, haven't had one bit of lag in online games. It's all on Automatic settings and I haven't changed anything specific (Linksys router, about 25ft away)

I did have a LOAD of wireless problems on the first night. I eventually fixed it by switching off the router for about 15 minutes and then plugging it back in again. Somehow, that worked Try that and see if that works, perhaps?

Same router I have. I typically get ~70-80% strength on my signal (AP is in the next room), but I never get disconnected.

Remember that are many factors that dictate the strength of a wireless signal, including potentially interfering devices on the same channel / wavelength.
