Anyone installed a bigger PS3 HD?

Getting a 20GB Japanese PS3 this afternoon and would be interested in increasing the HD size. Is this easy to do and has anyone here done it? What about data transfer? Also, how big are the downloads off the PS store?

Ive not done it myself but i beleive its as easy a sliding in the new HD and telling the PS3 to format it. As for downloads for game demos they are anything from 300-600mb from the ones i have seen.

      There's one thats 890MB, I think it's NBA.

The only problem is that if you put linux on there, the standard partition for that is 10gb so thats half your hd gone.

I have an external WD drive 320g and you can save everything to it from the PSN.
If you were to replace the HDD the max is limited to 120g for about £130 due to it being a 2.5 lappy drive
My 320g was £71 and they do a 1tb model for £270 they work via usb perfectly

very easy to do, takes less than 5 minutes from opening the side slot to replacing the existing drive. the beauty is all your account settings are still intact on the PS3 (must be internal ram it`s stored on), so you don`t lose them. doing the backup utility will sort all your saves & any content (like PSN games) you have. very elegant & easy solution for sure.

I upgraded my hdd. Managed to get a 120gb fujitsu drive from overclockers.

It really is simple but when it comes to unscrewin the hdd from the metal frame, use a drill. The screws are on so tight.

edit. btw, the 120gb hdd cost around £60

The only thing putting me off doing this is that you have to connect it to the front of the PS3 don't you?

Found this 160gb one for a reasonable price - would this be okay?

I've not upgraded the drive myself yet but the recommendation of people who have is to get one with as much cache as possible as they've found a big reduction in load times with 16MB.

More than 120GB 2.5 drives are quite rare though so you may just have to do with the one one you found above.

So it's just the HDD that's required? Is that then ready to slot into the PS3, or is some kind of harness or enclosure thing needed?

The PS3 HD is just a standard drive so it's just a matter of getting hold of a compatible drive, sticking it in and the PS3 will format it for you.

You can then transfer everything from your old HD by attaching it via a USB mounting.

Does anybody know if what the maximum capacity that the PS3 will recognise via USB is?

So, just to get this straight: I back up the HDD to my ipod, insert the new HDD, and then reformat, transferring all the old data back?

I've not heard of anybody doing it to an iPod but I suppose it won't be a problem as its' a standard hard drive.

Have a look here though: http://ps3hddmod.blogsite.org/
They seem like experts! It does actually tell you how to do it in the PS3 instruction book using the backup/restore facilities on the PS3 setup menu.
