not sure what you're into, film-wise, but with bluray japan and the us are the same region (same as how uk and japan are both region 2 for dvds) so if you were to get either a us or jap ps3 you'd be able to pick from both of them, but of course you'd not be able to watch uk blurays that are region-locked.

i had no idea some bluray films were region-free, though, that's pretty cool (what i like about hddvds is that they're all region-free).

Sony have said in a press release their Blu-Ray movies are coming out region-free. Warner Bros, so far, has released region-free blu-rays as well. Other studios have been locking regions, though.

How does online and the PS store stuff work with a foreign PS3?

One thing to bear in mind about PS3 games is that, even though they are region free, you may have trouble getting onto the multiplayer servers with foreign copies, and also the PS3 runs its own internal 'localisation' to censor or adjust parts of supported games depending on your home region. For example, if you play a US copy of Resistance: Fall of Man on a Japanese PS3, a lot of the gore and all the 'hero moments' are cut. There's no telling how much this will affect future games but if the Germans have anything to do with it, it could ruin the PAL console.
