Thinking of buying a PS3, need some help....

With my Xbox 360 off to be repaired I'm seriously thinking of buying a PS3. I thought the Wii would hold my attention for a week or 2, but I can only play the thing for a few mins at a time. I need some online action and the money is burning a hole in my hand!

I was in Virgin the other day & spent a good 15 mins looking at Motorstorm being demoed, it looks pretty sweet. How's the online aspect of it? Solid? Can you have voice chat etc? What other games are any good? My main gaming is on the 360, so V Tennis, VF5 etc. will be bought for that.

Aside from the console, what other extras would I need? Headset? (I have a spare HDMI lead, so that's not needed). I know I've ribbed the PS3 owners of late, but this isn't a wind up!

The actual cost (although high) isn't a problem, my biggest fear is buying it & it being reduced in a month or 2. I got stung by Microsoft on the original Xbox, and don't want a repeat performance! Should I wait for a while, I'm desperate for a game of Motorstorm though....

I got stung by Microsoft on the original Xbox, and don't want a repeat performance! Should I wait for a while, I'm desperate for a game of Motorstorm though....

Did you not apply for your two free games and accessories? I seem to remember being quite pleased about it, as it worked out that the stuff they were giving away was more than they dropped the price by. (and I was already happy with the system as Halo was so good)

I doubt Sony will be dropping the price any time soon as it's only just come out, and apparently did quite well here.

Everyone I know with the game says it gets old very quickly though, and I can certainly see why after the demo. Resistance is ok online, but it's region locked. (as most people I know decided to get a PAL machine instead of importing it may as well be an offline game for me)

Online I've heard Motorstorm is a ****in' mess - Laggy **** - Go check the RLLMUK online impressions - Does strike me as strange that since it launched here next to nobody has posted any impressions about it ??? Then again, it all has to be positivity on here relating to PS3 these days or you're a fanboy

It's one of the biggest things putting me off (and why the wii doesn't get more airtime except when people are round) - Xbox Live has turned my gaming into a highly sociable experience which neither of those consoles can offer - I don't even like putting the 360 on if it's not connected.

I just told you - compared to live it's an abomination.

No cross game voice chat, no cross game invites, no cross game messaging (you need to return to the XMB to do all of this).

No private lobbies, region locked servers - the list goes on.

I fully expect the usual SDF response to this but it's fact.

Ask yourself how many positive posts you've seen about online PS3 gaming since it launched ?

Online gaming isn't really important to me in any form, so I can't really offer any opinions there, but I can say that if I'd bought my PS3 primarily as a games machine I'd have been disappointed - the game I've played most on it is God Of War 2, so that probably speaks for itself. I know there'll be some great games for it eventually, so I'm not too concerned.

However, as a Blu-Ray player, it's excellent & the main reason I acquired one - obviously if movies aren't your thing, that'll mean precisely nish to you though.

Honestly mate, the online PS3 functionality is poor. Fair enough, it's free, but it's not fit to lick the boots of the 360's XBL component -- and rightly so too, since we're paying for it.

Virtua Fighter 5 and Blu-ray playback were my main motivations for getting a machine. If there isn't a game that you really must have or BD doesn't float your boat, save your coins till something comes along that really grabs you mate.
