I agree with the notion that you should avoid the Samsung sets, they all feature mandatory image processing that is a bit OTT. It makes alot of images look worse than they should do.

They aren't really budget either, the cheap ones are old models (and are the worst for the DNIE processing) and the new ones will cost only fractionally less than a Toshiba or Sony.

Samsung's customer service is absolutely terrible, aswell.

While the TVs are nice when they're working, when they go wrong you're going to have to wait ages, and ages, making plenty of phone calls. A colleague of mine where I used to work had a samsung TV that he was trying to get repaired and the hell he went through just trying to find out exactly what was going on with his TV was... well, terrible.

When I worked for Toshiba a few years ago, some of their cheaper TVs were made by Samsung and rebadged.

That was in the nineties - no idea if it is still true.

Reason I say this as I hear lot of feedback saying Samsung is poor. If there are some good models I apologise. But again it is down to your research / whim / budget / eye judgement.

Unless you are going 50 inch plus, 1080p are useless. 1080i will look just as good on smaller sets. You won`t spot the difference.

Yeah, 1080p is going isn't that much of a benefit at the moment when it comes to resolution...unless you have a ridiculously sized TV.

One of the advantages that you are more likely to notice on a smaller set is that it can add extra "warmth" to a picture, it can help to make the picture look more organic compared to a much more clinical lower def display.

Depending on what TV you are using and what you are doing with it you may well find that 720p gives a far better picture than 1080i.

Choddo on RLLMUk is font of all knowledge HD wise and if you go LCD rather than plasma he said Sony X series are best followed by Samsung. He said the rest (sharp tosh etc) were all in the same ballpark
