PS3 - Edges of screen cut off when using component?

    Hi all,

I have a Philips HDTV that has a DVI-I socket. The TV comes with a coponent-DVI adaptor, and I'm using the Sony component AV lead to connect to the tely.
The weird thing is I'm losing about half a centimetre all round the edge of the screen where the picture (and any text) gets cut off. This happens at any resolution - 720p/1080i, and although its not a massive issue, it's a tad annoying.
Has anyone else got a set up like this or a similar problem at all?

    It's just overscan no?

Yeah, welcome to the fantastic world of Component overscan. I've used a number of televisions with the same issue on the 360 via Component (3-5% overscan).

        Aha, thanks for that.

Does it mean that there is nothing I can do about it? Is there (or will there) be any other way to connect via DVI? Like an HDMI/DVI adaptor perhaps?

I think you can get a DVI-to-HDMI adaptor (for PC use), but I don't think you can get a HDMI-DVI one working with the PS3 (or if it's even possible), as if the the PS3's HDMI output is HDCP protected it'll probably prevent conversion. I'm sure someone will post with more concrete knowledge on the matter.

Gah - the annoying thing is I sold my HDMI TV as it was too 'big', and bought this 20" one for my 360. I had to have the 360 in my spare room due to its constant noise waking up the missus, and my 32" TV was overpowering in there.

Now the 360's gone, and he PS3 is so quiet, I'm back in the main bedroom but I need HDMI again. Duh.

You can adjust for overscan by accessing the manufacturer settings on the remote. Often, the TV lets you have different settings for different inputs. It's quite easy on Sony and Samsung TVs, but don't know what the key combination for Philips is. Try searching Google.

i had this issue on my samsung when using the 360 in vga. Do you have the option of naming your av channels? if so change the name to pc and it will go into the correct pc mode

                    That should do the job.

I get a similar thing through HDMI but only when in 1080i. And it only has a 5cm border at the bottom of the screen. Anyone know a solution?

You're referring to underscan. Sounds obvious, but try placing your television on auto-detect or repositioning the screen and saving the settings over the HDMI channel.

Hmm..can't read the text on that page?

I've managed to access the service menu of my TV, but I'm worried about messing up the settings, so I'll leave it for now and try again when I've summoned up the courage!

I've done that loads of times, and still no result.

Have you thought about moving over to Component? I don't know how big your screen is, but 5cm is a lot to lose.
