    Laptop trouble

Okay, I know this is mainly Q & A for import gaming, but I really need some assistance from some of the more tech-minded out there.

I was using a Toshiba 430CDT laptop earlier today, and the Windows 98 shutting down screen froze whilst I attempted to shut down. So, I hit the power button... And the damn thing froze.

All the laptop is doing now is bleeping repeatedly, refusing to shut-down at all, no matter how many times I try and press the power button.

Can anyone help me out and explain as to the possible reasons why the machine may be doing this?

I do believe I encountered this a couple of times on my old PC. My only solution was to pull the plug. Or in your case, remove the battery. I believe it's a Win98 glitch that causes the shutdown to **** up royally (as I've heard similar stories from others) but it's fortunately quite rare. Hopefully the next boot should be fine... unless it's doing that every time you shut down...?
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

Wow...a question taylor made for me. (I'm a Toshiba Qualified Laptop Engineer)

Ok, the first thing you should do is to press the hard reset button on the machine...its below the PCMCIA slot on the left hand side of the machine. That should clear it, but if not then remove the AC and Battery for a couple of mins and that definitely will. I've just had a quick look at the known issues for that machine and i can't see anything that fits your fault description and so i reckon it'll just be a one off problem and nothing to worry about. You could try installing the Windows 98 2nd Edition Shutdown Patch and if the problem was anything related to that you should be ok.

Anyway...try what i've said and let me know if you need any more help.

EDIT - Bear in mind that you usually have to hold the power button for 5 seconds before anything will happen.

        Hey, thanks a lot.

        Problem solved.

I located the hard reset through your instruction. I hadn't really checked around the PCMCIA slot.

The main power button wasn't doing anything no matter how many times or how long I pressed it
